Coffee Hydration Study: Does Coffee Dehydrate You? (Answer: No)

This counterbalanced cross-over study in 50 habitual male coffee drinkers put the “coffee dehydrates you” claim to a direct test, and coffee came out level with water. Across total body water, urine output, urine concentration and blood markers, four cups a day looked no different from the same volume of water. In caffeine habituated men drinking moderate amounts, I treat coffee as fluid, not as a fluid debt.

That is consistent with the higher urinary sodium excretion seen here on coffee. A diuretic effect has been demonstrated at large doses of 500 mg or more, while low to moderate doses have not induced diuresis, and early work suggested that regular caffeine intake builds tolerance to the diuretic effect.
