How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

During HBOT, you breathe 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than 1 atmosphere absolute, breathing intermittently. The premise is that extra oxygen could help muscles work harder or recover faster.

During prolonged and intense exercise, oxygen use by tissues and organs creates hypoxia in the body’s internal environment, which mobilizes glycolytic energy supply. That leads to lactic acid accumulation in muscle or blood and glycogen depletion in muscle. Oxygen therapy has been applied as an ergogenic aid on the theory that raising oxygen availability offsets these effects. The pooled data do not support that for pre- or post-exercise use.
