Are Long Daytime Naps a Warning Sign in Older Adults?

Long daytime naps track with worse thinking in older workers. In this cross-sectional study of 308 older adults still in the workforce, those who took naps longer than 45 minutes had 2.20 times the odds of decreased cognitive performance compared with those who took no naps at all (95% CI 1.00 to 4.83). Brief naps, meaning 45 minutes or less, showed no significant relationship with cognitive performance.

The other half of this paper is about work hours. Older adults who worked 40 or more hours per week had 2.07 times the odds of decreased cognitive performance compared with those working fewer than 40 hours (95% CI 1.03 to 4.18). Both findings held after the researchers controlled for covariates.

This was a cross-sectional analysis, meaning participants were assessed at a single point in time rather than followed forward. The data came from the 2013-2014 waves of the National Health and Aging Trends Study, and the sample was restricted to 308 workers who had usable data on work hours, sleep parameters, and cognitive functioning. Participants slept an average of 6.87 hours, with a standard deviation of 1.27 hours. Nearly 43 percent reported daytime napping, and most of those naps were brief, at 45 minutes or less.

Against that background, two exposures separated out. Working 40 or more hours per week carried 2.07 increased odds of decreased cognitive performance. Napping longer than 45 minutes carried 2.20 increased odds. The confidence interval on the nap finding runs from 1.00 to 4.83, so the lower bound sits right at the line of no effect. That is a real result, but a fragile one.

The reason for it deserves attention.

The work hours finding interests me just as much, and it points the same direction: the aging workforce is growing, and how long someone works in a week is something a clinician and a patient can actually talk about.

Why This Matters

Both exposures in this study are modifiable. That is the practical point. Nobody can undo a decade of aging, but a schedule can change and a nap can be shortened or investigated.

If long napping is a marker rather than a cause, it gives clinicians a free, easy signal to act on. No fancy test is needed to notice that someone is sleeping through a large part of the day. A spouse, a family member, or a primary care doctor can spot it.

The conditions that often sit behind heavy daytime napping are treatable. Sleep apnea responds to CPAP. Depression responds to therapy and medication. Early dementia, while not curable, benefits from earlier diagnosis and planning. Catching these problems early is exactly the kind of upstream medicine that helps.

Important Limitations

This is cross-sectional observational research, so it cannot prove that long naps or long work weeks cause worse cognition. The link could run the other way, with hidden illness causing both the napping and the poorer test scores. The sample was small at 308 workers, and it was drawn from older adults who were still working, a group that is not representative of older adults generally. The confidence interval for the nap finding touches 1.00, which means the result is statistically borderline. The authors themselves call for future research into the longitudinal effects of work times and daytime naps.
