Can eating too much salt harm your memory as you age?

In men, yes. In a 6-year study of 1,208 cognitively healthy older adults, higher sodium intake at baseline was linked to faster decline in episodic recall among the male participants only. No such link appeared in the group as a whole or in the women.

Episodic memory is what lets you remember what you had for breakfast, where you parked the car, or a conversation from last week. It is often one of the first things to slip with age.

How the study worked

The researchers used data from the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle study, often called AIBL. They followed 1,208 older adults whose thinking and memory were normal at the start. The average age was 70.87 years, and 41 percent were male. Each person completed a food frequency questionnaire to quantify sodium intake, then underwent full neuropsychological assessment at baseline and at four more timepoints spaced 18 months apart, covering 72 months in total. Scores were grouped into six cognitive composite domains, and linear mixed models tested the association between baseline sodium and cognitive change, with adjustment for potential confounders.

What makes this study useful is its length. Six years is enough time to see real changes in memory, not just a snapshot. Because everyone started out cognitively unimpaired, the researchers could watch how memory changed from a clean baseline rather than mixing in people who already had problems.

What the data show

After adjusting for the false discovery rate, the researchers found a negative association between baseline sodium intake and change in the episodic recall composite in males (β = -0.00002; SE = 0.00001; FDR adjusted p = 0.044). Men with higher sodium intake declined faster on episodic recall. No association turned up in the cohort as a whole, and none in the women. The team also stratified by apolipoprotein E status and found no associations there either.

That sex difference is the core of the finding. The signal was not a general effect that happened to be stronger in men; it was present in men and absent everywhere else the researchers looked. The study does not explain why, and the authors call for sex-specific approaches in future work.
